About the Minimum Age of Antiques
By Dan Krueger of dan*s_biz
When we speak of antiques, we must first clarify what actually is meant by the term antiques. When I write, for example, on model cars or advertising, these genres are clearly distinguished from other collections. The definition "antique" is a rather generic term, that describes a whole conglomerate of things. The word "antique" is derived from the Latin word "antiquus", which means "old." But what do we mean by "old"? In the past it was always like this generic term was describing objects, which should have attained a minimum age of about a hundred years. Personally, I would set the age limit at the end of Art Nouveau, so in the years 1910 to 1915. Objects from the period thereafter, for example of Art Deco collectibles, or from the time of the Bauhaus, I would already attribute to the modern style and art forms. However, this is my personal opinion and I accept other opinions, which the age limit or bring forward further into the modern era. Also rare modern utensils are sometimes offered in antique houses and antiques shops. Also in the opposite direction chronologically pre-and early history there are certain age limits. Although the name is derived from ancient antiquities, and we understand at the time of the ancient Romans, ancient Greeks, Sumerians and ancient Egyptians, no one will get the idea to call an ancient vase from the pre-Christian times as an antique. It is treated more as "ancient art". So I would share here too a certain limit and objects until the age of the Renaissance described as antique. Even the art, or even everyday art of the early Middle Ages as the Carolingian or Ottonian I count among the antiquities. Here may I ask your indulgence in the art-historical and archaeological professionals among its readers, but collectors of us, I think, be allowed to "own" personal time management of old objects. This is not meant to be scientifically sound, but rather serve as an auxiliary crutch. What items fall within the definition of antique? By definition, all objects actually fall, without exception, under the umbrella term antiquities, which have reached such an determined age. This is one aspect of the definition, a different result is obtained if one collector friend asked what they consider to be an antique. Most frequently then is referred to old furniture, old trunks, old clocks, old paintings, antique china valuable, as are valuable old books, but also older objects from the realm of militaria or old maps. The amount of aggregate objects is limited therefore by our association, our idea of what can be understood as antiques, already quite strong. Easier it will be to list what can not be described as antique. This follows from the fixed time limit. The majority of old tin toy for example is not within the definition of antiques, many of the manufacturers were not founded until after the turn of the century. No more so than we will subsume the objects of the golden 20s, Art Deco or even the '50s or something from under the promotional umbrella term antique. Very often the personal living area, so the immediate area of daily life, is filled with old-style furniture. That is, these old furniture to be part of almost everyday lives. This is a significant difference when comparing treated as any other antiques. Whether old precious glass, porcelain, pottery or weapons - such valuable old items rarely participate in everyday life, so do not end up in the kitchen cabinet, but on the contrary, adorned showcases, are ultimately only to look at and admire there. So it very much depends on the subjective point of view, what is antique and what is not.
